Culture and Spa in Tunisia

DAY 1, Friday - Arrive in Tunis

Arrive in Tunis and transfer to your hotel in the seaside resort town of Sousse. This evening enjoy a welcome dinner with your fellow travelers.

DAY 2, Saturday - Bardo Museum, Carthage & Tunis City Tour

Following breakfast, start your day with a visit to the Bardo Museum, a former Ottoman palace housing one of the finest collections of Roman and Carthaginian mosaics in the world. Next, visit the ancient Roman ruins of Carthage with ample time to visit the US war cemetery and learn about Tunisia's role in World War II. Continue to the nearby picturesque village of Sidi Bou Said, whose architecture was inspired by its Andalusian settlers. Following Sidi Bou Said, drive into the heart of old Tunis for a walking tour of the medina, Tunisia's historic heart. Late day return to your hotel.

DAY 3, Sunday - Northwest Tunisia Excursion (optional excursion)

This morning depart Tunis for the northwest part of the country, taking scenic, rural roads, with your first main destination being Bulla Regia. This well-preserved site has numerous examples of underground architecture, as well as well-preserved mosaics. From Bulla Regia, you drive north southeast to Dougga. Dougga is Tunisia's largest Roman site. Covering some sixty acres, Dougga was known as the city of temples and its existence is thought to date back to the 4th century B.C. Following your visit to Dougga, you head west to rural, northwest Tunisia

DAY 4, Monday - Kairouan, El Jem & Sousse (optional excursion)

This morning depart Tunis and travel south to Kairouan. Today, Kairouan is a rather provincial town, though it was founded and developed in the 7th century. From Kairouan, you drive to El Jem, known in Roman times as Thysdrus and noted for its amphitheater, which is similar to the Colosseum of Rome. Following your exploration of El Djem and the nearby El Djem Museum. From El Jem you drive north to the coast with a visit to Sousse, where you will have a walking through the historic Sousse center, before the return trip to Hammamet.

DAY 5, Tuesday - Roman sites of central Tunisia (optional excursion with lunch)

Morning departure with your first stop being the site of Oudna. Known in Roman times as Uthina, Oudna has been undergoing excavations that have yielded some rather impressive finds, including stately homes, baths, cisterns and a theater. From Oudna, you continue south to Thuburbo Majus, a city whose foundation can be traced to the pre-Roman Punic period, but whose impressive remains were built by the Romans. Lunch will be at a farm in this rural agricultural region, with a visit to Zaghouan, site of a Roman aqueduct that carried water from the hills of Zaghouan all the way to Carthage, a distance of over 130 kilometers. From Zaghouan, you return to Hammamet.

DAY 6, Wednesday - The Cape Bon peninsula (optional excursion)

Today your touring takes you to the Cape Bon region of Tunisia. A fertile, agricultural region that was developed by the French as the heart of Tunisia's wine industry. As you travel the Cape, you will have numerous opportunities to stop, with some of the nicest places to visit including Nabeul, historically the pottery center of Tunisia, the small historical towns Kilibia and Kerkouane, the largest Punic town in Tunisia, where mosaics remain within the ground from the early period. Lunch will be served at a restaurant near the seaside. Late afternoon return to your hotel.

DAY 7, Thursday - Visiting an NGO project that empowers women, plus, an in-depth visit to the Tunis bazaar, including lunch! (optional excursion)

This morning you have a visit to a part of Tunis that is visited by few. It is an area of lesser economic development, but a location where a Tunisian woman started a micro-finance project that has spawned over 300 women, entrepreneurs. The founder of the project will speak about about how such a project started, as well as providing visitors an opportunity to meet some of the recipients of the foundation's projects. The excursion then continues to the medina, where your guide will take you through this historic part of the city and its many alleyways of shops. A wonderful opportunity for purchasing gifts and/or handicrafts before departing Tunisia. Lunch in a local restaurant will be included in this optional day excursion.

DAY 8, Friday - Depart for the USA

Optional Extension to the southern desert region!

Day 9, Friday Depart on a morning flight to the south of Tunisia to the island of Jerba. Upon arrival, you drive to the southern end of the island where you will visit the small village of Guellela its ethonographic museum. The displays provide a good perspective about the life and culture of Jerba (also spelled: Djerba). You then take a ferry to the mainland and drive to the region of Matmata. This region's crater like topography is dotted with troglodyte dwellings. Its exotic settings provided one of the film locations for the movie, Star Wars. You will have an opportunity to explore some of these dwellings and the region, as well as have lunch in a troglodyte restaurant. You continue on to Douz, an oasis town in the northern erg of the Sahara and often a jumping off point for camel treks deeper into desert. You will have time to visit the local market in Douz, before going to your hotel. Dinner tonight will include a folklore show. Overnight in Douz. (B, L, D)

Day 10, Saturday This morning you depart on 4x4's south into the desert region. Your drive will take you via desert tracks and off-the-road with an eventual arrival to your desert encampment. A lunch will be prepared by people from the region using traditional methods of cooking and foodstuffs from the environment, in typical Berber fashion. This afternoon, you have the opportunity to go on a camel trek, which can last two to three hours. Your accommodations tonight will be in weather protected tents with heating. Dinner in the camping region. (B, L, D)

Day 11, Sunday This morning you depart your desert encampment and drive through rugged, undeveloped terrain in your 4x4 with an eventual arrival to the ksour region, a region named for its unique form of indigenous desert architecture. You will visit the relatively remote Berber village of Chenini, providing you with a sense of life in this hilltop, desert town. Your touring continues with a visit to other ksour villages before heading east to the coast and taking an old Roman causeway, to the island of Jerba. Time permitting, you will have a chance to walk through the island's main town, Houmt Souk, where the souk and numerous restaurants provide the options for shopping and/or lunch. Return to Tunis by plane, transferring to your hotel in Tunis upon arrival. Dinner suggestions will be provided. Overnight in Tunis. (B)

Day 12, Monday Transfer to the airport for your flight out of Tunisia.
