A little about TunisUSA... TunisUSA is an entrepreneurial company that has become one of the few tour companies in North America that has made Tunisia its specialty. The company is American owned and specializes in cultural/historical tours to Tunisia, both for groups and individuals. Meet TunisUSA's CEO... TunisUSA was founded by Philadelphia based entrepreneur, Jerry Sorkin. A frequent traveler to the Middle East and North Africa for more than two decades, Sorkin had multi-fold interests that first took him to Tunisia in 1983. His impressions of Tunisia were very different than many of the countries he had previously visited. A University of Pennsylvania graduate, with undergraduate and graduate degrees specializing in Middle East Studies and international business, respectively, Sorkin found much of interest to cause him to return to Tunisia with frequency following his initial visit, soon traveling to Tunisia as much as four times per year. Throughout his visits, Sorkin's network of Tunisian friends and contacts broadened, as did his appreciation for the country, which he came to know rather intimately through his explorations. In 1990, Sorkin's Philadelphia based Oriental rug business J.M. Sorkin had received some national press, when a well known interior design magazine made note of a rug weaving project he was involved with in Tunisia. Sorkin soon found himself not only responding to queries about his interesting line of rugs, but also received many inquiries about Tunisia, as a country. Sorkin had also been actively involved in Middle East peace efforts, trying to build bridges between Jews and Arabs. He was taken by Tunisia's ancient Jewish community on the island of Jerba, where even today, one finds a youthful and vibrant Jewish community. Seeing this as an anomaly, Sorkin furthered his interests on this topic and soon found himself a frequent guest lecturer on the topic. Once again, Sorkin found his involvement brought media coverage and once again, Sorkin was struck by how few people were aware of Tunisia. Between his many interests, his passion for Tunisia and his entrepreneurial instincts, Sorkin began organizing tours to Tunisia in 1993 under the umbrella of his newest venture, TunisUSA. With the media exposure that some of his early tours brought, the company soon found itself fielding many inquiries about the little known destination. Thus, due to a passion for Tunisia and entrepreneuiral insticts, TunisUSA was born.
